Exhibition Workshop/Mid-Review

The exhibition workshop with Magali Avezou was very helpful for developing ideas. It was useful to talk to someone about our project fresh, and work through ways to engage our audience more. For example we: - Displaying the work in different locations both inside and outside of Trinity, and getting people to move between each image in a kind of trail. - Prints that will dissolve in the rain. - Salt damaged negatives - Looking into contemporary equivalents (such as migrant crisis, not having a memorial) - Exploring the fact that there's no sea nearby - Other people lost at sea (such as artist Ban Jas Ader) - And damaged photographs (Such as Ricoh's 'Save the Memory' initiative after the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in 2011) Mid-review My main feedback was to work on research. Since most of our groups work has so far been geared towards location and concept, we lack a lot of practical research into photographers, technique and presentation. However now our con...

Trinity Theatre Visit

Image
After our trip to London our group went to Tunbridge Wells to explore Trinity Theatre. Since the outside and foyer are the spaces available to us, these are the areas we focused on, talking about potential locations of prints and potential areas we could theme the project around. After a long discussion we also solidified our theme. We would like to focus on a single memorial in the foyer dedicated to a woman who died at sea in the 1800s. This stood out to us for a number of reasons, such as the fact that it is so prominent still in the theatre and is only for one person, as well as that such a plaque is so far away from the coast, and the concept of travel between England and India 200 years ago being a long and potentially dangerous trip. We talked about using long exposures, ICM and other abstract techniques for seascapes, although the specific kinds of image are still subject to change. However this means we can finally get to work on other aspects of the exhibition.

Lalu Delbracio Workshop

Image
Lalu Delbracio's talk focused on art exhibitions beyond a print on a wall. Using ripped layers of paper on walls and the floor, as well as performance pieces. We found it a little tricky to relate to photography, since it is predominantly a 2D rectangular medium. However it definitely got us thinking more about ways in which we could present work more uniquely. For example on the floor so that people walk over the images, or using fabric to embellish the framing. In the workshop our paper sculpture referenced the elements more literally than other groups. Using high waves to represent water, the island as earth, a small campfire as fire, and a wind turbine as wind.

Locations

Image
Aldwych Tube Station Whilst this is a really interesting looking location, the price is the biggest issue for this location, £700 is well out of our price range especially since that's only for an hour. Tenterden Train Graveyard In this case the remoteness of the location is an issue, since traffic would only come from people coming to photograph the area or people coming to see the exhibition. Displaying work in such a dilapidated location may also be a health and safety concern. Trinity Theatre The theatre is a location I know very well, it's close to my parent's house and I worked there for some time. As an arts centre they're always keen to host arts events. After emailing the front of house manager they seem to be happy to give us use of the foyer and grounds for free which would be brilliant, especially since there will likely be people coming to the theatre and decide to take a look at the exhibition. The only issue is the di...

Photographic Communities Brief

Image
The basic aim of this project is to put on a group exhibition in which we find the venue, promote and organise the event, and create the work.  We did a little bit of research in the first session, with our main focus on trying to find a location. Since the project has to link to this location and the space with influence the display methods we agreed a location was the most important thing at this stage and split apart to search. I have some links to a church converted to a theatre and arts centre in Tunbridge Wells and thought it might be a good location to work with, so spent my time getting some images to explain the area to the others in my group and researching other exhibitions in similar places.
